In this section, we feature an example of FaNs activity from a care home somewhere in Essex. This time, we are going down in Benfleet where Melanie, the manager at Oakdale, introduced the idea of FaNs at one of her annual cheese and wine parties. There was lots of interest and several people were inspired to suggest new opportunities to make community links. These included an introduction to Southend Football Club and potential opportunities for links with the local library and a local County Council staff team.
Oakdale also has links with SEEVIC, the local college, and loves to see the pleasure her residents get from the contacts with the students and the way the students’ perceptions of care homes change as they get to know what really goes on. There are regular garden parties and barbeques and Melanie invites people from other care homes to join in. She and her staff also collaborate with other local homes to share ideas and activities. There always seems to be something going on at Oakdale!
Melanie is starting to use her FaNs folders to welcome and thank Oakdale’s many FaNs. She is keen to be in contact with other managers and is happy to share her ideas and experience. She can be contacted on 01702 553734 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org
